Aussie music has long been making its mark on the global stage and this month’s list of songs on high rotation at Sportsgirl reflects what an amazing homegrown industry of muso’s we have!
The Holidays – 2 Days
Having just finished up a series of festival slots including St Jeromes Laneway, South by Southwest, Groovin the Moo and the Great Escape, you could say big things are happening for Sydney boys The Holidays.
With a fun, classic rock and roll vibe (they cite Television and Teenage Fanclub as early influences), their debut album, “Post Paradise” released in 2010, is full of catchy, foot stompin’ tunes that have the industry praising them – and it’s not hard to see why!
They have scooped up a swag of awards including the Australian Music Prize’s Best Debut Album, and we are loving ’2 Days’, which we are spinning all this month instore. In the meantime, check out another of their hits, ‘Golden Sky’.
Miami Horror – Summersun
If you like to get down on the d-floor, chances are you’ve been carving up some moves to some Miami Horror tunes.
The band started out as a solo project for producer Benjamin Plant, a local Melbourne DJ and is now a 4-piece live band who have taken their distinctive dance-pop sound around the world.
They’ve toured with the likes of Phoenix, Simian Mobile Disco and Friendly Fires, and have collaborated with local sweetheart Kimbra, as well as members of Neon Indian. Known for putting on wild shows full of energy, charisma and chaos, we can’t get enough of Miami Horror, in particular their latest offering, ‘Summersun’.
Architecture in Helsinki – Escapee
Now over 10 years old, Architecture in Helsinki is one of Australia’s most loved indie exports. Creative and innovative, the band is known for making their quirky brand of music from unusual instruments; from the glockenspeil to handclaps to retro synthesisers.
They’ve toured all over the world (yes, Finland included) and played alongside greats such as Death Cab for Cutie, David Byrne and Belle & Sebastian.
Up to their fourth studio album, “Moment Bends” marked what critics declared a “return to form” and features one of the catchiest pop songs of the year, ‘Escapee’.
